WILLYS INTERLAGOS – LITTLE BRASILIAN WONDER

Willys Interlagos was a descendant of the witty and fast Alpine A 108, a vehicle that came to be marketed in France as dreamed its creator, Jean Redele. Redele built his first race car based on the Renault 4CV obtaining numerous victories in alpine type race (hence the name Alpine).

Later his small factory in Dieppe was acquired by Renault who then supplied the engines. From there he began to extend its manufacturing to Mexico between 1965 and 1974 under the name Dinalpin, to Spain between 1967 and 1978 as Bulgarrenault, to Bulgaria between 1967 and 1969 as Bulgaralpine and to Brazil under license Renault Alpine, cars that were assembled by Willys Overland local factory.

The Brazilian version was presented in the Hall of Sao Paulo in 1961.

Officially 822 units were manufactured between 1961 and 1966. It was one of the milestones in the automotive industry carioca country. The name was chosen in honor of São Paulo circuit proposed by Mauro Salles, an enthusiastic promoter of motorsports in the country.

Its engine was housed in the rear of the vehicle. They were rear wheel drive and were built with three engine sizes: 845, 904 and 998 cm ³, with outputs of 40, 56 and 70 hp respectively. 70 hp engine was mounted only in the saloons version, which had a more aggressive appearance and character that the coupe and convertible version. They won great victories in the hands of famous Brazilian racer Emerson Fittipaldi.

Today the brand founded in the beginning by Jean Redele survives even under the control of Renault as a subsidiary or associated company.
